What should I tell a roofer about an active leak?

State whether water is entering now and which area is affected. Include when you first noticed it and whether the pattern changed. Keep the description factual. Do not enter an unsafe area or climb onto a roof to gather information.

Put safety ahead of documentation

If there is immediate danger, contact emergency services and stay clear of the unsafe area. Do not climb onto a roof, touch wet electrical equipment, or enter a visibly unsafe space to complete a form. For urgent roofing service, contact an available roofing professional directly; a website request does not dispatch help.

Give the location and timing

From a safe place, describe the affected room or area, whether water is entering now, and when you first noticed it. Useful detail is ordinary detail: “rear office near the window” and “during the afternoon rain.” You do not need roofing terminology.

Describe changes without guessing the cause

Say if a stain grew, dripping stopped, or the symptom has appeared before. Include previous work if you know about it. A nearby storm record can be optional context, but it does not identify the leak’s cause or establish insurance coverage.

Questions to take with you

  • State whether water is entering now.
  • Give safe observations and timing.
  • Leave the cause for an assessment.

Make a leak observation note if it is safe to do so. For urgent service, call directly rather than waiting for the form.
